EU Parliament Report Validates Biotech Venture Pathway’s Mission to Boost Innovation

10/24/2025

A recent, pivotal report from the European Parliament on the “future of the EU biotechnology and biomanufacturing sector” (A10-0123/2025) strongly reinforces the work of the Biotech Venture Pathway Project. The report’s findings provide a critical high-level policy context for the project’s efforts to enhance competitiveness and talent development in the peripheral regions of Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

The European Parliament’s resolution, adopted on July 10, 2025, recognises biotechnology as one of 10 strategic technology sectors crucial for Europe’s future. The report repeatedly calls for necessary actions that mirror the project’s core objectives:

  • Improving Knowledge Transfer: The resolution highlights the need to improve knowledge and technology transfer between academia and industry (Point 31).
  • Talent Development: It stresses the importance of enhancing entrepreneurial skills within the sector (Point 33).
  • Regulatory Streamlining: It calls for action on streamlining regulatory frameworks to accelerate market access (Point 8, 10).

Project Work Aligns with Regional Policy Needs

The Biotech Venture Pathway Project, led by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and funded by EIT Food, is leveraging its training programme to gather essential, ground-level data and identify regional needs. This data will directly inform the project’s final goal: crafting policy recommendations for Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) in Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

The Parliament’s findings will serve as a crucial framework for these regional recommendations. By training a wide pool of students and staff and collecting their innovation challenges, the project ensures that its policy outputs are not only relevant to the peripheral regions but also strategically aligned with the overarching European ambition for the biotech sector.

Flexible Enrollment Continues

The Biotech Venture Pathway Programme remains free, 100% online, and flexible, allowing participants to enroll and complete the self-paced training until the end of December 2025.

This accessibility ensures a wide pool of talent from the target regions can participate, further strengthening the data set used to shape the project’s S3 policy recommendations.
